Grand Targhee Resort held the annual 24 Hours of Targhee mountain bike race this past weekend, with solo and team riders lapping an 8+ mile course (with 1000+ ft elevation gain per lap!) from noon on Saturday through noon on Sunday. Goal? To do as many laps as possible in 24 hours. And stay awake . . .

On September 12, 2009, the closing weekend of our summer season, Grand Targhee Resort invites the bravest, boldest mountain bikers in the region to travel at ludicrous speed down our mountain. Race details available here and here. A peek at our trails below:

One of the most challenging mountain bike endurance races? Isn’t that like saying one of the snowiest avalanches? It’s an endurance race – aren’t they all challenging?
Well, yes. But we’re talking about a unique group of mtb racers here. 100 miles on a mountain bike, as fast as you can go? Only the top sadomasicists athletes on wheels sign up for that sort of pleasure and pain.
This past Saturday a group of these challenge-seekers descended upon Grand Targhee Resort for the inaugural Pierre’s Hole, a 25 mile loop of mostly singletrack gaining a blistering 4600 feet in elevation on each lap.
Grand Targhee Resort was a hotbed of activity this past weekend with $4 food and beverage deals, $4 chairlift rides, the 14th Annual WYDAHO MTB race and the 1st Annual Fred’s Hill Climb creating quite the scene on the main plaza.
Visitors from near and far gathered at the base area to soak in the sun and scenery – and ponder what would motivate someone to race up a mountain on a day, in many places, dedicated to celebrating one of the most cherished of American freedoms: the right to do nothing.
